We know you’ve heard about it by now – Rihanna and Chris Brown chose the occasion of her 24th birthday on Monday to reveal their new quid pro quo collabos with each other – him on her tune ‘Birthday Cake’ and her on his tune ‘Turn Up the Music’. And they used their closely watched Twitter feeds to let everyone know they don’t care about the inevitable backlash either with Rihanna tweeting: ” “They can say whatever, Ima do wahtever… No pain is forever —– YUP! YOU KNOW THIS.” Chris tweeted in kind: “Let them be mad!!!!! We make music. Don’t like it, don’t listen! Turn up the music remix is coming soon too! Guess who’s on it?” Our opinion on this? It is utter folly. You know we here at Islandista have lots and lots of love for Rihanna but as a woman-centric site, we have to call a spade a spade. And before people come blah-blah-blahing at us about forgiveness – please, don’t bother. Save your breath. People always seem to conveniently forget that forgiveness follows repentance. Even God in heaven doesn’t forgive us our sins unless we repent. And be honest – has Chris Brown ever seemed [...]

Well? Would you? Saw this yesterday on the Facebook page of Bajantube - a super popular Barbadian entertainment/video upload site and it definitely gave me pause! I stopped, scrolled back up and my jaw dropped. It’s like a social studies project on Barbados tatted on her back – from the flag to the map to the national flower (Pride of Barbados, just so ya know). I thought two things: 1) That HAS to be a Bajan living overseas – West Indians living outside of the region have a particular depth of emotion and sentimentality for their island homes that you don’t neccesarily have when you’re living here. 2) Owwwwww! I have two teeny little tats and those stung – I can’t imagine her pain threshold! Comment is divided. Some are lauding it as the ultimate show of patriotism while others say it’s just too much. Your thoughts, islandistas?

Hurrayyyy!!! for funky, spunky Bajan pop/rock band CoverDrive who achieved their first number one single in the United Kingdom yesterday. The young quartet signed with Sony and Geffen less than a year ago. It has been a rapid rise that has taken a long time – as contradictory as that sounds. The kids have been managed by ‘momager’ Kerrie Armstrong, mother of drummer T-Ray for a while and the Armstrong family’s musical history goes back further than that, with dad Ray a popular musician in Barbados in the 90s. The Armstrongs have made a lot of sacrifices and put a lot of work into these kids, even living apart while she supervises them overseas and he holds down the family fort in Barbados. They deserve a ton of credit for keeping CoverDrive focused and getting them where they have been. Naturally, the Rihanna comparisons have begun for front woman Amanda Reifer, which is making some folks mad. But can you really blame the media? First off, not to take any, any shine off of the band’s success or Amanda’s talent as a singer and songwriter but she does fit right into the mould of the other Barbadian singers who [...]

Today, we salute Doreen Lawrence, the Jamaican-born mother of Stephen Lawrence, who was as she herself rightfully put it, not just a murder victim but “a bright, beautiful young man who any parent of whatever background would have been proud of.” After 18 years – just as many years as her son spent on this earth, Doreen Lawrence’s long and dogged battle for justice for her son has finally seen some justice as two of his murderers, Gary Dobson and David Norris were convicted today in the United Kingdom. We are so overwhelmed with emotion at this. Anyone who knows anything about it cannot help but be moved at this case which was one of the most significant of the 20th century in Britain. Stephen Lawrence’s death and the bungling, incompetence and indifference that delayed justice for him for 18 years, changed the face of Britain. It prompted deep and official soul-searching about policing methods and attitudes in the U.K. The landmark 1999 report on the case which concluded that the Metropolitan Police Force was “institutionally racist” confirmed what many Black Britons had been saying for decades. The case and the dignity and passionate persistence of Doreen Lawrence and Stephen’s father [...]

Oh what interesting political times we have seen in the Caribbean this last month! In Jamaica, cries of “power” are ringing out across the land as the People’s National Party, led by Portia Simpson-Miller has been swept back into office. Jamaica’s PM-for-a-day (ok, ok two months), the Jamaica Labour Party’s Andrew Holness must certainly be rueing his decision to call a snap election now with the Electoral Office of JA now predicting a landslide 40-23 victory for the PNP. Sista P on the other hand must be relieved as all hell. Her political career was on the line today – if she had lost, the sharpened knives that have been out for her since 2005 would have chopped her to teensy little bits. People’s heads are spinning right now. First thing, all polls predicted a tight election with a statistical dead heat between the PNP and the JLP. So, what the hell happened to that? Then, there are the implications for other countries like Barbados, where similar results in St. Lucia at the end of November caused nervousness among the ruling party that they too could be another one-term government. And of course it raised the specter that Holness called the [...]

Islandistas, here is another one to add to our (limited) archives of things that get the oh-so-rare islandista stamp of approval. In three and some years of posting, we have only given two stamps of approval so you know that when we do, it has to be good. And the Holder’s House Farmer’s Market in Barbados is both good and good for you. Established by Holder’s House scion, polo player and Jack Kidd of the famed British Kidd family, the market started in November with the aim of being “as organic as possible.” Unlike other popular farmers’ markets, this one starts a bit later – from 9 a.m. on Sunday mornings and goes on until the early afternoon, so it’s ideal for passing through after church. Right now, it’s on break, with both Christmas and New Year’s Day falling on Sundays but we wandered through just before the break and it was lovely. It was a bit light on the actual farmers though there were a few people selling fresh fruit and vegetables and one fish vendor selling very fresh mahi-mahi and tuna. However, it was packed with people selling organic food products like kefir milk, ital food and jams and jellies (me [...]

We don’t know much about Joyce Carol Vincent – and that is the central theme of this very sad and strange story. We know that she was British, of Caribbean descent, the youngest of her sisters and the only one born in the U.K. We know that she was beautiful with ambitions of being a singer. And we know that she died, alone in her apartment while apparently wrapping Christmas presents (for whom?) with the television on in December 2003. And horrifyingly, that there her body remained for three years. Undetected, unnoticed, the smell of decomposition being attributed to the rubbish skip outside and eventually wasting away to skeletal remains until the council which assisted her with rent, broke into the apartment to reclaim it because of overdue rent. What makes it all the more mysterious is that Joyce Vincent did not seem like the ‘type’ to die alone and undiscovered for years on end. She had family, lovers, friends and workmates but drifted away from everyone, didn’t stay in touch and no-one thought anything of it when she went missing. Moreover, we Caribbean people tend to be so engaged and ‘inna inna’ each other’s business and lives that this [...]

A friend sidled by and mentioned “You see your girl is on the cover of Town and Country?” Run we did to the computer and indeed there she was – St. Lucia’s own Shala Monroque. The cover – eh. It did her no favours, as commenters over at the Fashion Bomb Daily noted. The fact that she is on the cover has the fashion blogosphere all a-twitter, much as it was when she covered New York Magazine in the summer. Besides the usual side-sniping about her only being in the public eye because of her relationship with Larry Gagosian (as if a rich boyfriend can buy Shala’s sense of style and talent), there is an interesting twist in a Daily Beast piece written by Allison Samuels. Samuels quoted one “editor of a major black lifestyle magazine” who snipped: “I’m not familiar with her at all. She’s pretty much put herself in white arenas and in the white world. She’s not living in the black world, from what I can tell. Until that happens, as great as it is that she’s getting attention—I’m just not sure if she’ll have an impact in the black community at all.’’ Despite our September interview [...]
