A funny thing happened on the way back to Islandista

I never thought I’d be away so long.

But in 2014-2015, I truly needed to take a break from Islandista.

Don’t get me wrong. I still loved it. I still got a buzz when I spotted my favourite islandistas out and shining or when I discovered ‘new’ islandistas excelling and doing it with ineffable island style. I still obsessed over Carnival costumes, love a costume with wings and adore origami like folds on a top.

But as women sometimes we have to give ourselves permission to not do it all and take care of ourselves. From 2014 to 2016 that’s what I did and it was glorious.

Instead of splitting my attention between my job, my family and my business – Islandista, I simplified down to work and home.

It was great. I can’t say I regret it. I enjoyed my work, I got to relax at home instead of spending all my free time slaving over Islandista and it felt good.

But after 3 years it’s time to come back. It’s no understatement to say a lot has changed in the last 3 years. Not just in my life or in our region but the world at large. And it’s a time where it’s more important than ever for those with clear voices and a grand vision of our Caribbean, to step up and speak up.

It was the reason I returned to full time journalism last year, as managing editor of the Nation here in Barbados. I’m leaving that post now but there’s a lot more that I still have to say.

Even in the few years that I haven’t been blogging things have changed rapidly and there are now more ways to make your voice heard. There was no Facebook live for example in 2015 when I last posted.

So I say all that to say – Islandista is back. Maybe not in the same form as before. Some things will remain the the same and others are not as much of a focus anymore.

The ways Islandista will reach you may also be different than before. Look out for more on that.

And speaking of things to look forward to – in a few weeks, it will be the 10th anniversary of Islandista’s founding!

What a time to return.
