DIY Hair

by Michelle Bridgeman

Hey ladies ever wondered how our favorite stars get that flawless look when it comes to their hair? Yes, they spend loads of money in hair treatments and hair care, but it is possible to achieve these same results for much less. Furthermore it is possible to achieve these looks with items from your fridge. Yes you read that right!

I will give you islandistas four hair treatment DIYs that can be made in under FIVE minutes and take 30 minutes or less to use.

Pro Tip!
Try applying these masks when you have finished showering and have begun to shampoo. The heat of the shower will open up the hair follicles allowing masks the maximum ability to reach deep and work their magic!

Coconut Oil Hair Mask

Coconut oil smells delightful but is perfect because it is not heavy on the hair like many treatments are.

You need:
2 parts coconut oil
1 part olive oil (optional)

Directions:

  1. Combine coconut and olive oil in a small bowl and mix well
  2. Apply the mixture to your hair, focusing on the ends
  3. Wrap hair in a bun on top of your head, cover with a shower cap and leave on for 15-30 minutes (depending on how damaged your hair is)
  4. Rinse out in the shower
  5. Shampoo and condition as usual

Is your hair thin? Want to have that extra body and strengthen your hair? The potassium in banana does all of this and like the coconut mask, does it all without making the hair feel too heavy.

You need:
I banana ( the riper the better!)
1 tbsp honey (optional)

Directions

  1. Blend banana in a blender, making sure all chunks are smoothed out (this is VERY important! If you don’t, you’ll be stuck with banana chunks stuck in your hair all day)
  2. Apply the mixture to your hair
  3. Wrap hair in a shower cap and wait 15-20 minutes
  4. Rinse out in the shower
  5. Shampoo and condition as usual

Avocado Hair Mask

I don’t know if any of you islandistas have ever tried an avocado face mask, but they work. The same goes for the hair mask. Plus the egg yolk included in this recipe is full of all sorts of fats and proteins to naturally revive hair.

You need:
½ avocado
1 egg yolk

Directions

  1. Blend the avocado and egg yolk in a blender
  2. Apply to your hair, working from the bottom up to your scalp
  3. Wrap hair in a shower cap and wait 15-20 minutes (this is a great time to use the egg whites for a pore-tightening facial!)
  4. Rinse out in the shower
  5. Shampoo and condition as usual

My final hair mask is actually ready made. It is simply olive oil. I personally use this regularly. All the other masks I have tried numerous times, but the olive oil treatment is a regular of mine as it is a great deep conditioner. Apply a generous amount to hair and cover with cap for 15 minutes. Rinse and shampoo and condition as usual and you are good to go!

When applying the treatment with the egg, make sure to wash out with cold water unless the egg will cook
