It’s upon us again islandistas! Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week is here and that means we are on the hunt once again for islandista fabulousness and style.
We’ll be looking out for islandistas like Jourdan Dunn, Melodie Monrose and Cora Emmanuel on the catwalks.
We will keep a keen eye out for the collections by islandista designers such as Carly Cushnie of Cushnie et Ochs and Project Runway winner Anya Ayoung Chee.
There will be islandistas in the front rows at the shows – June Ambrose, Shala Monroque et al will be planning their wardrobes and those of their clients and publications.
And there will be islandistas at the parties and the red carpets – maybe we’ll see Ms. Kerry Washington-Asomugha at a few!
So to get you in the spirit of fashion season, here are a few islandista fashion tidbits to get us going!
First up, let’s look at a newcomer who could be the next top model from Jamaica – 16 year old, netball-loving Kai Newman who is represented by the mighty Saint International. Models.com has featured her as their Model of the Week this week and many have noted that her strong, long face echoes another model with a Jamaican connection – Naomi Campbell.
What do you think?
And speaking of buzzy young Caribbean models, take a look at the fun showcard which New York Model Management did up for Marihenny Rivera Pasible.
She’s been super hot recently so here’s hoping we see a whole lot more of her on the catwalks this week!
And when we’re talking about top islandista models to look out for, don’t forget Sigrid Agren!
Ye I know, the name isn’t one that flags itself as ‘islandista’ but Sigrid, who is ranked in the top 10 on Models.com, was born and raised in Martinique, the child of a French mother and Swedish father. She is a real island girl who can more than handle herself in kweyol conversation and like Frank Collymore said of us who live on small islands, she always remembers the sea – when Vogue asked her what topic she could wax poetic about, she told them:
“I’m from an island, so I’ve always been near the water. I don’t think I could live somewhere far from the sea.”
