In a move sure to have islandista approval in her native Bim where the MAC stores are like religion, Rihanna is teaming up with the makeup brand for one of their most high profile and in-depth collaborations ever.
The deal, which Rihanna called a “no brainer” was announced late last week. She told Women’s Wear Daily:
“When you think of makeup, the brand that pops into your mind — for something legit — is MAC. Whatever color you want, it’s like ‘Let’s go to MAC.’ I’ve been using MAC on tour for such a long time it was a natural fit for me. I have always loved makeup, and I always said that if I do it, I want to do it with a credible brand.”
While MAC has had lots of star collaborations over the years, this one is different as they are going in for multiple collections with Rihanna, as opposed to their usual one-off star collections or colours.
Rihanna will develop not one, not two but four collections, called Riri (hearts) MAC, starting with a takeoff on the signature MAC Ruby Woo red lipstick she wears so often.
Called Riri Woo, the lippie’s release will coincide with her Diamonds Tours concerts at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn in early May. MAC will open a pop-up shop on the first night to showcase the line.
And so it will continue throughout 2013. MAC admitted that the long-term collabo is a departure for them. John Demsey, group president of the Estée Lauder Cos. Inc., MAC’s parent company said:
“We always say that MAC likes to go on a date but doesn’t really want to go into a relationship. This relationship with Rihanna is a long-term one.”
