‘I Am An Islandista’ featuring Jeunanne Alkins

Jeunanne Alkins

I am so proud to feature the next brilliant and creative Caribbean woman in the ‘I Am An Islandista’ series.

One - because like I said, she’s brilliant and creative.

Two, because I’ve been able to witness her brilliance and creativity up close for about ten years now as we go way back to our UWI days.

Many of you would have seen her cool, very Caribbean design work in regional lifestyle magazine Maco where she was the design manager for several years.

Now, she has branched out, starting her own company, the quirkily and Trini-ly named Everything Slight Pepper. And just these last few months she has branched out even further, starting the ESP jr. line of baby clothing which I am basically obsessed with.

Three, because she really is what you think of when you think of an islandista – island-hopping, Carnival-loving and all.

And so, in her own words, I present to you… Jeunanne Alkins.

WHO
Islandista: is Jeunanne Alkins?
Jeunanne Alkins: A design entrepreneur and artist. I run a Caribbean Design Studio called Everything Slight Pepper(ESP) specializing in publication design and branding. I also recently launched a new division called ESPjr, which is devoted to the creation of indigenous content for young audiences.

Is:…has most influenced what you’re doing now?
J.A.: My parents

WHAT
Is:…is an islandista to you?
J.A.: A secure, authentic, confident Caribbean woman

Is:… do you love most about your island?
J.A.: Trinidad’s ethnic diversity it allows for a unique melting pot culture. Our people, food, music, art and landscape are a very interesting hybrid that I haven’t experienced anywhere else.

WHERE
Is:…do you see yourself in five years? In ten years?
J.A.: Always creating and never becoming jaded

Is:…is your ‘happy place’?
J.A.:Trinidad, Jouvert morning, 5am, alcohol soaked, covered head to toe in cocoa and dancing by myself alongside my friends and family is my perfect blissful place both mentally and physically.

Is:… do you call home?
J.A.: Now – Trinidad, but I’m nomadic, I could easily end up anywhere

WHEN
Is:… you worry, what do you worry about?
J.A.: Not getting to finish the gazillion ideas I have written in all my notebooks.

Is:…are you happiest?
J.A.: When I discover that my family and friends are proud of me through simple understated gestures.

WHY
Is:…do you love what you do?
J.A.:I get to play an active part elevating the Caribbean design aesthetic.

HOW
Is:… would you like to be remembered?
J.A.: As authentic

Is:…do you unwind?
J.A.: I’m haven’t been really unwinding, however my first love (Carnival) is coming so ask me again in a couple months :)

Jeunanne’s family in Winnipeg, Canada are so proud of her accomplishments – she is truly an Islandista – and such a creative one too!
