Hmmm… you would have to have been living under a rock if Rihanna’s latest video for her song We Found Love doesn’t leave you with that reaction after watching it.
Let’s start with the realllly obvious – the Chris Brown relationship references. The whole video depicts Rihanna in a toxic but passionate relationship with the male lead of her video – British boxer/model Dudley O’Shaughnessy.
Mr. O’Shaughnessy bears more than a striking resemblance (omg, no pun intended honestly!) to Rihanna’s notorious ex, Chris Brown. The light skin, the slim but muscular frame, the toothy grin and just in case we didn’t get it, they dyed his hair blond too.
The graphic and edgy video shows them loving hard, partying hard and fighting hard – including a dramatic fight in a car.
It’s… well it just makes you go hmmm.
Like hmmmm, is she exploiting the two year old notoriety of her relationship with Chris Brown and its violent bust-up?
But she walks out on him at the end. Which is another hmmm.
Like hmmm is she trying to signal that you have to walk away from such toxicity?
But they do look gorgeous and sexy in the video so hmmm is it glamourising domestic violence and drug use?
One thing is for sure – Rihanna keeps pushing that envelope and making people talk.
The video would already have been attention-catching even without her turbulent and well-publicised romantic history. It is visually captivating, dramatic and raw.
Combined with her history, it will continue to keep Rihanna’s name on everyone’s lips. Fitting then that her new album is called Talk that Talk – because we sure will.
